10 Healing Herbs You Never Considered for Holistic Care

Today we will be discussing ten lesser known herbs and spices that have been used as holistic cures and disease prevention in their native cultures, sometimes for thousands of years. While these ideas may seem foreign to you, keep an open mind, and remember that in these cultures, heat disease isn't the number one killer, and obesity isn't a major health factor either, so maybe the "more primitive" people might actually have the right idea.

Fenugreek: A popular staple in the Indian and Mediterranean areas, this herb contains diosgenin, a natural progesterone booster. It has been reported to lessen menstrual cramps and ease hot flashes.

Cardamom: This seed contains high levels of fatty acids that can help prevent memory loss and help treat some eye issues like glaucoma.

Mustard Seed: When taken whole, the mustard seed can actually boost your metabolism and promote weight loss.

Cumin: Is a natural remedy for disorders such as digestive distress, postnatal care in women, and disinfecting open wounds. Often cumin is used in conjunction with other herbs or honey.

Tumeric: The main ingredient in curry, this herb has strong anti-inflammatory properties and is also reported to purify the liver.

Saffron: Saffron has many beneficial properties, including some anti-inflammatory uses and evidence that it slows macular degeneration (loss of eye sight). Saffron is also currently being used in a study that suggests that it might be useful in slowing the growth of certain cancers.

Cayenne: And other hot peppers contain a chemical called capsaicin. This chemical is used as a topical pain reliever (for muscle soreness, not open wounds), as well as an appetite suppressant and metabolic booster.

Ginger: Has been used in the East for centuries for many holistic remedies, including heart disease, constipation, and other digestive troubles. It also helps flush excess water retained in the body.

Astralagus: A member of the Pea family, astralagus has been purported to be a sort of Chinese cure-all. While the jury is still out on many of its uses, we do know that it contains very high levels of antioxidants, which can slow the processes of degenerative diseases.

Licorice: Licorice was used by ancient peoples to aid in the digestion of foods, and combined with other herbs and spices to aid in the absorption of these medicines. It can also be used as an appetite suppressant.

These ten herbs and spices, some more well-known than others, have all shown themselves to be healthy alternatives to a less holistic lifestyle. Give them a try today, and let us know what works for you by posting a comment.
