Basil lends a spicy flavor somewhat like mint, pepper, and cloves or anise. You either like it or you don’t but it is very much worth a try. Most of the time basil shows up as pesto sauce but it can be used many different ways in vegetables, on chicken or beef and other meats, and in salads. It shows up most in Italian Mediterranean and Thai food.
